Julian would always find her. He’d drag her back, no matter what. And Christian? He would never let anyone take a Grayson away. Unless Christian was gone for good, he’d keep chasing Madeline forever.
That wasn’t the life Madeline wanted. She could never abandon her child just to stay hidden here on her own.
So really, her only choice was to go back as herself. That way, at least she could see her children whenever she wanted.
Casey understood that, and so did Madeline.
She pressed her lips together, lost in thought.
After a long silence, she looked down and gave a helpless little smile. The Graysons refused to let her go, and she couldn’t bear to leave her children behind. There would never be a clean break between her and the Grayson family.
Casey glanced at her, his eyes deep and unreadable.
The kids were her anchor, but also the unbreakable tie between her and Julian.
If he were a little more heartless, maybe he would have made the decision for her.
Casey stood up, the corners of his mouth barely lifting. “If you want to go back, I’ll have someone take you. Think it over.”
He walked out. Jordan watched him leave, shook his head, and sighed with real regret before following him.
“You regret it, don’t you?” Jordan asked quietly when he caught up. “You should’ve listened to me. If you’d just let her forget everything, she would’ve stayed. You know as well as I do, if she goes back this time, she won’t ever come back.”
He had risked everything to save her, only to hand her back to someone else. Even Jordan felt bad for him.
Jordan had told him there were ways to block Madeline’s memories, to erase her past so she could stay here. But Casey refused. He wouldn’t even let anyone tell Madeline about the two billion dollars he’d spent or the finger he’d lost for her.
Casey’s gaze was dark as he absently rubbed his hand. He managed a bitter smile. “If I did that, would I be lying to her, or just to myself?”
If he really went through with it, it would be nothing but a lie. And when the truth came out, she’d only end up hating him.
…
In the Capital.
Josh and Brady couldn’t stand watching Julian like this anymore. Every day he worked, searched for Madeline, did everything like nothing was wrong.
But was he really fine?
If he was, he wouldn’t be suffering from endless insomnia, wouldn’t spend every day desperately looking for her. He was just bottling up the pain, refusing to admit anything, refusing to accept reality.
If he kept going like this, Julian would break.
They figured it was better to let him vent, to force a real release.
So they dragged him out to a private club. A line of expensive bottles glittered on the table. Josh popped one open and shoved it into Julian’s hand.
Julian’s eyes were ringed with exhaustion, his whole face drawn and tired. “What’s this about?”
“Tonight, we’re getting drunk with you. When you wake up, just let her go, man. It’s been two months. Time to let her rest in peace.”
“Josh!” Brady shot him a worried look, tugging at his sleeve.
