Helene could feel her heart pounding, her whole body trembling with fear.
Two knocks sounded at the door. Courtney glanced over. “Who is it?”
“Mrs. Fortner, Ms. Fortner, it’s me.” George’s voice came through from the hallway.
Helene took a deep breath, pulled herself together, and called out, “Come in, please.”
George stepped inside, arms full of fancy gift baskets. He gave them a small, respectful nod. “Mrs. Fortner, Ms. Fortner.”
Courtney quickly put on her best smile. “George, what brings you here? And with all these gifts, too.”
She hurried over to take the packages from his hands.
“These are from Mr. Grayson.” George explained.
Helene smiled softly. “Thank you. Please let him know I appreciate it.”
Courtney’s eyes sparkled with curiosity. “Did Mr. Grayson have any message for us today?”
George nodded. “Yes, he asked me to check on Ms. Fortner’s recovery. He also wanted to know her preference for the engagement party venue. He said everything should be just the way you like it.”
The worry in Helene’s heart melted away instantly. She broke into a sweet smile. “Grandpa Christian’s always so thoughtful. My injuries are almost healed, really. It won’t be a problem.”
“For the venue, let’s go with the Royal Hotel, like before.”
She glanced at Courtney, sending her a silent signal.
Courtney caught on right away. “George, shouldn’t we set a date for the engagement soon? We really shouldn’t keep delaying.”
Her tone was extra polite. George had been with Christian for years and had quite a bit of influence. It was important to stay on his good side.
George nodded again. “Mr. Grayson said we should pick the date based on Ms. Fortner’s recovery.”
“Helene’s injuries aren’t serious at all. We’d like to have the party as soon as possible. I checked the calendar, and the first of next month is a great day. How about then?”
“The first of next month? That’s just two weeks away. Will Ms. Fortner really be fully recovered?” George asked, a bit worried.
“I’ll be fine, George, I promise.” Helene spoke quickly, eager to reassure him.
She was desperate to move things along. The longer they waited, the more likely something could go wrong.
“Alright, I’ll let Mr. Grayson know,” George said.
“Thank you, George.” Helene’s smile was bright and genuine.
Once George had left, Helene finally let herself breathe. She turned to her mom, eyes shining. “Mom, my wish is really coming true.”
Courtney squeezed her hand. “Yes, Helene. Congratulations. You’re going to be Mrs. Grayson soon.”
They shared a knowing, excited look.
George went back and reported everything to Christian. Christian agreed right away. The engagement was set for November first. While Julian was still busy at work, Christian had the news released to the public. With everything official, Julian would have to go along with it, whether he liked it or not.
…
In Noah’s hospital room, James had already left. Casey was still there, scrolling through his phone.
A news alert popped up. Julian and Helene’s engagement party was set for November first.
November first. Casey couldn’t help smirking as he looked up at Madeline. “So, how do you want to celebrate your birthday next month?”
