Casey glanced sideways at the woman next to him, a crooked smile playing on his lips. “Relax. You’re not getting that chance.”
James leaned in a little, his eyes lingering on Madeline, dark and magnetic. “You sure about that, Madeline?”
Casey lowered his gaze at her, silent but intense, making it very clear that if she was going to say yes, he’d have her on the next flight back to Country Y. The tension was almost funny, if it wasn’t so overwhelming.
Madeline suddenly found herself the focus of both their stares. She pressed her lips together and shook her head. “Seriously, you two just met and you’re already at each other’s throats. You’re not getting the chance. And you, you’re not my boyfriend.”
James’s eyes flashed with understanding, but he didn’t look even slightly discouraged. He just shrugged and grinned. “Don’t be so eager to turn me down? You could just not say yes or no. Madeline shot him a look, half amused, half speechless.
Honestly, she’d never met a guy who would volunteer to be someone’s backup plan. Most men would be way too proud for that. And this was James Palmer, the golden boy of Palmer Group, adored by everyone. The fact that he’d say that so casually was crazy.
Casey just raised an eyebrow and stayed quiet, as if he was actually fine with what James had said.
Madeline watched the two of them, stifling a laugh. Were they really both willing to wait around for her, all in the name of “love”? She felt like she must be some kind of legend to pull that off.
Then again, she figured this was probably just their egos clashing. One of them had pissed off the other, and now they were both trying to get a reaction out of the other man.
“Alright, cut it out. I don’t need anyone waiting around as my backup.”
James just smiled, completely unfazed. “That’s fine. You know how I am. The more you push me away, the more determined I get. Turn me down all you want.”
Madeline couldn’t help but smile a little. James really hadn’t changed at all.
