The maids had all huddled in the corner, still shaking from the chaos. By the time they realized what had happened, it was way too late to chase anyone down. Outside the hospital room, a crowd had already gathered. People stared at the mess inside, half horrified, half fascinated, and pretty soon, everyone was whipping out their phones to snap pictures.
“Oh my God, what did those two do to get back at like this?”
“They must have done something awful. Nobody gets treated like that for no reason.”
Raine came stumbling out, looking completely wrecked. The people nearby immediately pinched their noses and stepped away.
“Ew, it smells so bad. Seriously, just go back inside. Don’t come out here.”
“Yeah, keep that to yourself. Don’t torture the rest of us.”
Their words stung. Raine’s face burned with embarrassment, so she had no choice but to slink back into the room. The stench of blood was everywhere, thick and nauseating. Helene was already doubled over, retching, completely out of sorts. On top of that, she was hurt and couldn’t get her wounds wet. The blood clung to her skin, sticky and impossible to get off without a thorough wash. Helene just sat on the bed, feeling helpless, like she was about to lose her mind.
Meanwhile, Brenda had grabbed James by the hand and dragged him far from the scene. Once they were sure no one was following, she let go and gave him an apologetic look.
“Sorry about that. It was chaos back there. There were so many people, I was worried your fans would spot you.”
James took off his mask and grinned. “Don’t worry about it. I told you, I was just doing everyone a favor. Even if someone caught me, so what?”
Brenda lifted an eyebrow. “You’re not scared Helene will come after you? She’s the daughter of the Fortner family.”
The Fortners were basically royalty in the Capital. No one wanted to mess with them.
James just shrugged it off. “She’s a Fortner, and I’m the second son of the Palmer family. If she wants to start something, she can try. Besides, you’re not exactly worried either.”
Brenda almost forgot that this movie star came from a family just as powerful. The Palmers could easily go toe to toe with the Fortners. There really wasn’t anything to be afraid of. And honestly, who would have guessed the cold, elegant leading man from the movies would show up in real life hauling a bucket of pig’s blood to help someone out?
“I’ve got nothing to lose,” Brenda said, smiling like it was no big deal.
