Julian stood outside the door for what felt like forever. He barely managed to find his voice. “Bring Oliver here.”
Miles’ eyes were just as sad. Poor kid. Whoever did this had to be heartless. If it really was Helene, Miles thought, then she deserved whatever was coming to her.
Oliver was brought over not long after. The moment he stepped into that heavy, silent atmosphere, he could tell something terrible had happened. His eyes filled with tears and before he knew it, they were spilling down his cheeks.
Julian turned, looking at him for a moment before speaking softly. “Go keep your mommy and your brother company.”
Oliver pressed his lips together, trying hard not to cry, but it was no use. Tears and snot ran down his face. After a while, he choked out, “Will… will Noah be okay?”
Julian’s whole body flinched at the question. He straightened his back, his voice tight. “He will. Go inside, talk to him a little, and try to comfort your mommy, okay?”
Oliver nodded, wiping his face with the tissue Julian handed him.
“Don’t cry, go on,” Julian said quietly.
Oliver stood at the doorway for a second to collect himself, then hurried inside. He moved quietly, not wanting to disturb anyone.
“Mommy…” His voice was small as he called for Madeline.
Madeline heard the little voice and for a second, she thought it was Noah waking up. She looked up quickly, hope flickering in her eyes. But Noah was still lying there, eyes closed, not moving at all.
A wave of bitterness hit her. She wiped her tears away and looked at Oliver, her voice raspy. “Oliver? What are you doing here?”
Oliver stared at his mom. She hadn’t rested at all since this happened. Her eyes were bloodshot, her beautiful face looked so tired it barely felt like her anymore.
He couldn’t hold it in any longer. He rushed into her arms, sobbing. “Mommy, Noah will wake up. He’s only sleeping. I know he will. he has to.”
Madeline’s body shuddered. For the first time all day, her expression cracked. She hugged Oliver back, her voice soft but steady. “Yes. Noah is just sleeping. He’ll wake up.”
He’ll be fine. He’ll be fine. Madeline had been telling herself that over and over, clinging to it for dear life. She hugged Oliver tightly, holding him close.
Julian stayed outside, unmoving.
Madeline and Oliver sat with Noah for a long time, talking to him. It was dark by the time the doctor came in and gently suggested they step out for a break. Madeline leaned over Noah, cupping his little hands and kissing them softly. “Sweetheart, Mommy will be right outside.”
She led Oliver out of the room. Julian was still there, waiting. As she walked out, slow and tired, he reached out to steady her.
She glanced at him, barely reacting, and tried to pull her arm away. He didn’t let go, and she just let it be. She didn’t have the strength to argue.
“You have to eat something.” Julian’s tone was firm, not really asking.
