Before Julian could say anything else, a bodyguard burst in from the hallway, breathless and wide-eyed. “Sir, something’s happened to Noah. You need to come right away.”

Julian’s heart dropped. He rushed down the hallway toward the ICU.

Julian’s chest tightened, pain stabbing through him as he watched. The tension in the hallway was suffocating.

He didn’t know how long he stood there, staring at her back. Finally, he forced himself to walk closer. Only then did he see the truth. Madeline was shaking. Her hands were clenched so tightly that her fingernails had cut into her palms, leaving streaks of blood. Ever since Noah’s accident, she’d done everything with a strange, hollow calm, as if she was just running on autopilot, doing what had to be done, nothing more.

A doctor came out, his face grim. Julian and Madeline both turned to him, bracing for the worst.
