Julian’s gaze, cold and sharp, flicked back to Madeline standing behind him. Their eyes caught for a long second. Julian tipped his head, narrowing his eyes. “You buy that?”
Madeline stood steady, her face unreadable. Her gaze slid from Julian to the assassins. “No. But they aren’t lying.”
She could tell these men were just saying what they’d been told. They were only following orders. There was no way they actually knew Julian, probably had never even seen him before. The fact that they insisted Julian paid them was proof enough that someone else was pulling the strings and feeding them lines. Bringing the kid to the Grayson estate was just a setup to paint Julian as the villain. Madeline wasn’t surprised at all that they said what they did.
Julian let out a cold laugh and pinned his stare on one of the men. “I’m Julian.”
The assassin froze, completely thrown off. “What?”
Madeline looked away, giving up on getting anything more from these guys. This was a dead end. Their boss hadn’t given them the truth, and this was all they knew. If they’d been just regular thugs, you might have been able to trace the payment. But these guys were professionals. The money went straight to their organization and only got split up after the job was done. There was nothing left to dig up here. Madeline wasn’t about to waste more energy.
“Miles,” she called.
Miles answered right away. “Here.”
Madeline looked so calm it was almost scary. Miles remembered her breaking down outside the hospital room, sobbing her heart out, and now she was stone cold, like the quiet right before a hurricane. Standing near her, he felt a chill and a new sense of respect. It was hard to wrap his head around it. Her child was still in the ICU, hanging by a thread, but she was here, piecing clues together and hunting for the truth. That kind of strength was rare.
“You mentioned Gabby. Where is she?” Madeline asked.
“She’s still at the Grayson house.”
“I want to talk to her.” Madeline glanced at Julian.
He nodded, his face unreadable.
Gabby had worked at the Grayson estate for more than thirty years. She’d cared for Christian, then Lucy and Brian, and she’d watched Julian grow up. She was one of the few staff members trusted with real responsibility. If she hadn’t been, Lucy never would have let her care for Brian’s study after he died. Even now, with everyone suspecting her, no one dared lay a finger on her without permission. Gabby sat calmly in her chair, looking perfectly at ease.
When Julian and Madeline walked in, Gabby didn’t even blink. It was like she’d been expecting them. She stood and gave Julian a proper bow. “Mr. Grayson.”
He nodded.
