Liliana was completely stunned.
She couldn't believe Linton would kneel and beg for their marriage.
In their relationship, Linton had always held the power; she was the one chasing him.
Liliana was acutely aware of this.
"Mrs. Kingsley, what do you mean by that?"
Old Mrs. Kingsley sighed again, holding Liliana's hand tightly. "Liliana," she said earnestly, "your grandfather was against you and Linton being together from the very beginning."
"In our generation, your grandfather was the sharpest judge of character. He was never wrong about people."
She lovingly stroked Liliana's pale cheek, taking a slow breath as her aged, serene face softened with memories.
"He knew you liked Linton, and he knew you had a fiery, determined nature. So he never dared to openly oppose you. Instead, he privately warned Linton several times to stay away from you."
"Your grandfather felt that your personalities were incompatible. He believed that even if your feelings were mutual, your natures would eventually lead you to hurt each other until you were both covered in scars."
"He didn't want to see his beloved granddaughter suffer, and he certainly didn't want to see you end up like that. He wanted you to be happy, which is why he refused to approve your engagement for so long."
Liliana had never known any of this.
She stared at old Mrs. Kingsley, her vision blurring. A heavy weight settled on her chest, making it hard to breathe.
Liliana's expression turned grim.
She had always believed she was the only one invested in their relationship, that her love was unrequited.
But what if… what if she and Linton's feelings were mutual?
