"Liliana, come, come over to Grandma. Let me have a good look at you."
Without hesitation, Liliana walked over.
Old Mrs. Kingsley and Liliana's own grandmother had been best friends in their youth.
Two best friends falling for the same man should have been a tragedy.
But both women were exceptionally good people. There were no cheap plots or bitter rivalries over a man.
When old Mrs. Kingsley learned that Liliana's grandparents were truly in love, she gracefully stepped aside, offering them her blessing and finding happiness elsewhere. She knew when to hold on and when to let go, a truly free spirit.
Liliana's grandmother had passed away early, and her grandfather, devastated by the loss of his love, followed her just a couple of years later.
They had been the two people in the world who loved Liliana most, and now they were gone forever.
Liliana walked silently to old Mrs. Kingsley's side. Looking up at her grandmother's dearest friend, she suddenly felt an overwhelming sense of grievance.
"Mrs. Kingsley…"
It took all her strength to keep her eyes from turning red.
But old Mrs. Kingsley was sharp and noticed Liliana's low spirits immediately.
Her heart ached for the girl. She gently touched Liliana's cool cheek, shot a fierce glare at the pig-faced Sebastian across the room, and quickly said with a smile, "My dear Liliana, you're just in time. I was just wanting to talk to you."
"Come upstairs with me. We two can have a proper catch-up."
With the hostess having spoken, no one else could object.
Liliana followed old Mrs. Kingsley upstairs.
As soon as they entered the bedroom, the old woman asked, her voice full of loving concern, "Liliana, did you and Linton have another fight?"
