The evening had dragged on for what felt like an eternity.
Gian hadn't made Danielle drink too much, but she'd still had more than her share. Now her chest felt tight, her mind foggy, and the room seemed unbearably stuffy. She realized she hadn't drunk in ages—her tolerance had slipped.
Seizing the excuse of needing the restroom, Danielle slipped outside the private dining room to catch her breath.
Tonight's gathering wasn't just Leanne; several business partners had shown up, all drawn by Ninesky Technologies' patents. Gian, of course, was hoping to strike a good deal. Bringing in revenue was the only way to keep the research department afloat—scientific research burned through money at a terrifying rate. Without steady income, there was no way to fund new projects.
If only they had government funding, like the prestigious Blackwood Research Institute. But Gian had chosen to start his own company, and that meant everything was harder.
The night air outside was cool, a welcome relief from the stuffy room.
Danielle breathed deeply, feeling the pressure ease from her chest.
"Alex, seriously, you don't have to. I don't want anyone thinking I got in through favoritism."
Millie's voice drifted over from nearby. For a moment, Danielle wondered if she was imagining things. But when she looked up, she saw Alexander striding in with his entourage. Liam was there, along with Keegan Clarke—a friend from their circle, though he rarely made it out to these gatherings, always busy with work.
"No one will think that," Liam assured her. "The doors at Cloudpath are always open for you."
Millie just smiled, saying nothing.
"Alex, what do you think—should I start my own company?" Millie asked.
Alexander replied, "You've got what it takes."
Millie rubbed her arms. "Early summer nights are still a bit chilly."
"Don't catch a cold." Alexander took off his jacket and draped it over her shoulders, his voice and expression soft.
Danielle looked away, her eyes shadowed. That scene—she'd dreamed of it before. Once upon a time, she'd imagined she and Alexander could be close, like any happy couple. That he'd care for her, just like this.
