As soon as Danielle finished speaking, Alexander strode past her, glancing her way with eyes as cold as winter frost. She couldn't tell if he'd overheard her last words, but the chill in his gaze lingered.
Raffy shot Danielle and Niki a sidelong look, letting out a derisive little huff. "Didn't you say you weren't coming back? And yet, here you are."
Danielle's expression was icy as she watched Alexander. She didn't understand—he'd already chosen to be with Millie. So why insist on calling her back for his grandfather's birthday dinner? Was it just to humiliate her?
She'd shown her face as expected. Now, this celebration belonged to Millie and Alexander. Danielle was about to quietly gather Niki and leave when Alexander's grandfather, Terrence, called after them.
"Danielle, you and Niki can sit over there." The old man pointed to a spot halfway down the long table—far from the seats of honor.
Terrence then ushered Millie and Alexander to the place of distinction at his right and left, with Raffy climbing straight onto his knee, making the old man beam with delight.
His intentions couldn't have been clearer. Ever since Danielle had married into the Davidson family, Terrence had never truly accepted her. Now, he was making it painfully obvious in front of everyone.
Bianca, noticing Danielle still standing, quickly chimed in, "Come on, don't make Grandpa have to ask you twice."
Alexander's gaze lingered on her with an unreadable intensity. "Not feeling well?"
There was something pointed in his tone, as if reminding her to play her part and not cause a scene. Danielle took a deep breath. She'd come this far—no reason to throw it all away now. Gathering her composure, she led Niki to their assigned seats.
Niki, sweet and perceptive, understood not to cause any fuss at a time like this.
