The Wife You Buried Is Back from Hell novel Chapter 58

"Still married, and you two already can't wait to move in together?"

Even though Danielle had braced herself for this, her limbs suddenly felt leaden, as if the floor had dropped out beneath her.

"Why aren't you saying anything?"

The moment Millie pulled her hand away and glanced at the doorway, her eyes met Danielle's. For a split second, neither of them looked away.

As soon as she saw Danielle, Millie scrambled upright on the bed. "I'll take Raffy to school tomorrow. I'll sleep on the lower bunk—hope you don't mind, Danielle?"

Danielle stayed silent.

She drew a steadying breath as her gaze swept around what used to be the master bedroom—their marital bedroom.

The wedding photo that once sat pride of place above the bed was gone. Even the bed she'd spent weeks picking out had been replaced with a heavy, old-fashioned wooden frame.

Catching Danielle's look, Millie flashed a broad, awkward smile. "Davidson said you weren't coming back, so he let me redecorate. It's just between friends—if you want to stay, you're welcome to crash here too!"

Danielle listened to that outrageous declaration and wondered if she'd heard correctly.

"No problem," she replied, the words edged with sarcasm as she forced a tight smile. "Sleep however you want. I'm just here to grab something."

She stepped inside and headed straight for the dresser. Pulling open the second drawer, she found it empty. The brooch was gone.

Danielle's brow furrowed. She checked the other drawers—nothing.

When she glanced up, her gaze landed on an open box of condoms left carelessly on the vanity.

Her chest tightened. If things had gone this far between them, why hadn't Alexander signed the divorce papers? Was he really willing to let Millie play the role of the illicit girlfriend, hiding in the shadows?

Danielle drew a slow breath, forcing herself to look away.

Millie noticed her gaze and, following it to the vanity, blurted out, "Oh, don't get the wrong idea! Raffy found those and opened the box—he was playing around and we forgot to tidy up."

Danielle let out a cold laugh.

If she believed that, she'd have to be a complete fool.

A moment later, she spotted a familiar folder on the vanity: the divorce agreement she'd given Alexander.

She flipped it open. Only her signature was there—nothing else had changed.

Danielle let out a bitter, sardonic laugh.
