Danielle blinked, unsure if she'd heard him right.

"What did you just say?"

Alexander spoke in that calm, measured tone of his. "You're always so harsh with her. She gets really upset about it. You should try to rein it in and apologize to her."

Danielle felt like she'd just been punched in the gut. For a moment, she could barely breathe, as if he'd just told the world's most ridiculous joke.

"So that's why you called me out here? To talk about this?"

A cold laugh escaped her lips. "If she's still alive and kicking, she can handle it herself. Don't come to me with this."

Alexander didn't rise to the bait. "And another thing—keep an eye on your daughter."

Danielle's mouth twisted into a bitter smirk.

Her daughter? As if she was the only parent. The words stung with irony.

Was he really starting to throw things in her face now?

She dropped her gaze, noticing the burn on his hand—large and angry-looking.

Once, she would have been beside herself with worry, fussing over him, tending to his wounds with gentle hands.

Now, looking at him, she just wondered why the burn hadn't been worse.

"Maybe if you could keep your pants on, you wouldn't have to worry about your daughter at all."

With that, she turned and walked back inside. Niki was still awake, so she took her by the hand and led her out of the master bedroom, back to the children's room for the night.

Niki clung to her mother's hand as they left, but couldn't help glancing over her shoulder at Alexander.

Then, silently, she turned back around and followed Danielle.

Deep down, Niki wanted her father's love. But she loved her mother more.

If Dad made Mom unhappy… then she'd just have to choose not to have a dad at all.

She never wanted to do anything that would upset Mom.

Watching them walk away, Alexander's face was unreadable, shadowed with conflicting emotions.
