The Wife You Buried Is Back from Hell novel Chapter 48

The man took a slow sip of his tea. "You've got a mouth, don't you? Why couldn't you call her yourself?"

Danielle was leading Niki into the room just in time to catch his words. She ignored him, pretending she hadn't heard a thing.

The Davidson family treated her like a glorified housekeeper, and it was all because Alexander allowed it.

Just then, the matriarch walked in. "Danielle, come sit next to Alex. Niki can sit with me."

She knew Danielle and Alexander's marriage wasn't exactly a love story for the ages, but she insisted on nudging them closer whenever she could.

Once upon a time, Danielle would have been over the moon for any chance to sit beside Alexander; she never let an opportunity for intimacy slip by. Now, the thought of even sharing a meal at the same table made her skin crawl.

"I'm not hungry." Danielle managed a polite smile. "Would you mind having dinner with Niki? I need to lie down for a bit."

With the old lady around, she didn't have to worry about Niki being bullied. Danielle relaxed without a second thought.

Gian had just called about a job offer.

"At least eat a little something, won't you?" the matriarch urged.

Danielle shook her head. "I'm just tired."

Bianca scolded her, "The matriarch is here, and this is the example you set for Niki?"

Everyone knew you couldn't just skip a meal in front of the family matriarch. If she couldn't get away with it, why should Danielle?

"That's enough," the old lady interjected. "Dani's been busy with the child all day. Let her rest."

Danielle nodded, grateful. "Thank you, Grandma. Enjoy your meal."

As soon as she left, Paula rolled her eyes so hard they nearly got stuck. The matriarch's blatant favoritism toward Danielle never sat well with the others. The more the old lady doted on her, the more the younger Davidsons bristled. Why did Danielle get special treatment when everyone else was expected to toe the line?
