The phone rang for a long time before someone finally picked up. "Hey, Danielle, what's up?"

It was Millie's voice on the other end.

Danielle wasn't surprised she answered. "I need to speak to Alexander."

"Davidson isn't able to take your call right now. If there's something you want to say, you can tell me and I'll pass along the message," Millie replied, her tone easy and almost cheerful. "No need to stand on ceremony with me."

Danielle's brow tightened. "Just have him call me back when he has a moment."

"Of course," Millie said with a soft laugh. "I'll let him know."

After she hung up, Danielle felt as though her heart was stuffed with cotton—heavy, suffocating.

In her past life, she had poured everything into this family, barely noticing the women who flitted around Alexander. She had trusted him completely, convinced he would never betray her; at worst, she thought, he might not love her, but infidelity never crossed her mind.

But after everything that happened last night and this morning, she saw things clearly now.

It wasn't that his heart was cold—he'd just given it away to someone else a long time ago.

She turned to leave.

Raffy came shuffling down the stairs, still groggy with sleep. "Mom, is my breakfast ready?"

"If it's not, you need to hurry. I'm going to be late."

He walked over to the dining table and saw the same old breakfast Julia had set out.

His face fell instantly.

"I told you last night, didn't I? Why didn't you make my breakfast?" he demanded, looking up at Danielle.

He sounded genuinely upset. He'd told her very clearly before bed, and he'd even been looking forward to it as he drifted off to sleep—only to wake up to nothing.

"Dad gives you all that money every month to cook for me and take care of me. Are you really just taking his money and not doing anything?"

"If you're going to act like this, I'll just tell Dad to stop giving you money. Let's see how you get by then."
