Once they were all seated, Mr. Hawthorne wasted no time getting straight to the point.

“We need to launch a satellite this year, but we’re short one chief engineer.”

He rapped his knuckles lightly on the table, his gaze settling intently on Danielle, who sat across from him. “You’re skilled in satellite orbit calculations. I want you back on the team.”

He turned to Gian next. “Gian, you’ll be the chief engineer. The satellite must be in orbit by the end of the year at the latest.”

Danielle felt her heart skip a beat, her mind struggling to catch up. Was her mentor really counting on her like this?

“Professor, I—” She gripped her teacup a little tighter, nerves prickling at her fingertips.

She’d always felt at ease in the world of aeronautics, but aerospace? That demanded even sharper calculations, greater focus.

“What is it?” Mr. Hawthorne’s eyes narrowed on her. “Do you have any objections?”

“I’ve been away from aerospace for a while,” Danielle admitted. “I’m worried I might be out of practice.”

“When did you start doubting yourself?” He picked up his cup and took a slow sip, his tone both firm and reassuring. “With Gian guiding you, you’ll be fine. It’s not like this is your first rodeo. Our country launches plenty of satellites every year. Let Gian help you get back in the swing of things.”

He paused, then added meaningfully, “Aren’t you the expert in this field? Who knows, maybe one day you’ll be the chief engineer leading a rocket launch yourself.”

Mr. Hawthorne had always had high hopes for Danielle.

“Of course, I know you’re still focused on the Ninesky project, and Dani has her hands full with the kids. Niki’s a bright one—if you’re too busy, I can look after her for you.”

He looked at Danielle with a knowing smile. “I heard she’s been studying advanced math lately?”

Danielle blinked in surprise, then nodded. “She has.”

“Bring her to Blackwood Research Institute. I’ll tutor her myself. You focus on the satellite work. Because of your unique status, the project will be credited to Gian and the Institute. Are you alright with that, or will you feel slighted?”
