The words of the crowd rang in her ears, sounding especially cutting.
No one could deny that Millie’s academic background and abilities were exceptional.
Still, no matter how capable she was, what mattered was whether she genuinely wanted to work here, not just strut around with a chip on her shoulder, all pride and no substance.
Danielle wasn’t so petty as to make things difficult for Millie over a personal grudge.
“Fine.” Danielle flicked her pen onto the table, leaning back in her chair, gaze cool and unruffled as she looked at everyone in the room. “Anyone who doesn’t want to listen is free to step outside with Miss Fletcher.”
The pen hit the table with a soft clack—just loud enough to punctuate the silence, but not so loud as to seem theatrical. Still, it landed with an unexpected weight among the group.
The unspoken authority of a leader quietly filled the conference room.
Instantly, the room fell deathly silent—nobody was about to risk their own job for the sake of the new hire.
Everyone knew exactly how competent Danielle was.
Some might have wanted to stand up for Millie, but, at the end of the day, most people looked out for themselves.
After a few seconds, Millie let out a cold, derisive laugh.
She sneered, “Alright.”
Gathering up her notebook, she stood and met Danielle’s gaze. “I hope you can hold onto that seat, seeing as you never should have had it in the first place.”
With that, she turned and strode out of the room.
Millie had honestly never imagined Danielle wielded real influence at Ninesky. Just a college grad, yet Gian had placed her on a pedestal.
What right did Danielle have to lead a team full of people with master’s and PhDs? The thought alone was laughable.
Millie had always been ambitious—she’d come to Ninesky aiming for a high position. Now that Danielle was standing in her way, of course she refused to accept it.
After Millie left, Danielle simply brushed off the disruption and calmly resumed the meeting.
