Danielle's brows knit together, her shoulders tensing as she froze in place.
For a moment, she thought she must have misheard.
"What did you say?"
She could hardly believe her ears.
Hadn't the house only just been mortgaged? How could someone already be here to take it away?
Frowning, Danielle unlocked the front door.
She had no idea when her mother had taken out that loan.
Just then, Vivian descended the staircase, quietly beginning a conversation with the bank official.
Danielle listened, her expression growing colder as she glanced down at her phone, checking the balances on every card she had.
The bank representative told Vivian there was no way to extend the deadline.
Unless the entire payment—principal and interest—was settled in full today, the house would be sold off by that afternoon.
At that moment, a sleek black Mercedes glided up the driveway and stopped in front of the house.
Danielle recognized the car, the license plate—her gaze turned even frostier.
The doors opened. Millie stepped out, steadying Alexander as he followed her.
"Alex, this is the house my mother and I were looking at. It's perfect for an older person—quiet, peaceful," Millie said lightly. "Let's take a look inside. If it feels right, we'll just buy it today."
Alexander's eyes flicked to the front door, meeting Danielle's. His look was cool and indifferent, as if seeing her there was no surprise at all.
Danielle almost laughed.
How perfectly obvious.
She'd barely slapped Millie's face yesterday, and today Alexander showed up with her to look at the house—to buy it out from under her.
He'd been here before. He knew full well this was her mother's home.
He was doing this just to see her humiliated.
Was this what marriage was supposed to come to? Ruthlessness, down to the last inch? The irony stung.
