When Leilani pushed the door open, Milford was sitting by the window reviewing documents, the sunlight outlining his cold, sharp profile. Today was her departure for Zamora; her flight was at 4:00 PM, giving her enough time to visit the sanatorium to check on Yvonne one last time.
Hearing the noise, Milford looked up. His gaze paused briefly on Leilani before returning to its usual aloofness. "Why are you here again?"
Hadn't she just treated Yvonne a few days ago?
Leilani ignored the barb in his voice and walked straight to Yvonne's bedside, setting down her medical kit.
Yvonne's eyes lit up, and she immediately sat up. "Leilani!"
She could now sit up on her own, and her legs were no longer as weak as before.
Leilani smiled faintly, taking out her acupuncture needles. "How are you feeling today?"
She wasn't here for Yvonne’s legs today; she wanted to stimulate the cranial nerves to see if Yvonne could recover her memory.
"Great!" Yvonne said excitedly. "I even took two steps by myself yesterday!"
Milford, whom they were ignoring, closed his file, his eyes involuntarily drawn to Leilani. She wore a light knit sweater, her hair loosely pinned up to reveal a pale neck, radiating a quiet calm. His Adam's apple bobbed as he inexplicably recalled her eighteenth birthday, standing in the sunlight in a white dress.
"Milford?" Yvonne's voice pulled him back to reality. "Why are you staring at Leilani?"
