"You haven't eaten yet?" she asked.

Callahan closed the file and reached out to affectionately ruffle her hair. "I was waiting for you."

His movements were natural, and his tone as gentle as always, but Leilani keenly detected a hint of something off. His fingertips were a bit cold. Furthermore, the way he had been staring at that document just moments ago clearly carried a heavy, solemn weight.

"Did you have a good time at dinner with your friend?" Callahan asked casually.

Leilani nodded. "Yeah. It's been a long time since we last saw each other, so we just caught up on the past."

She opted not to mention Ethan's name, and Callahan didn't press her for details, merely offering a soft murmur of acknowledgment.

The air in the room settled into a temporary silence.

Just as Leilani was about to say something, Callahan's phone abruptly rang. He glanced at the screen, a barely perceptible frown pulling at his brow. "I need to take this."

With that, he rose to his feet, walked out to the balcony, and smoothly slid the glass door shut behind him.

Leilani froze in place, her brows furrowing as she watched his silhouette out on the balcony.

Callahan never used to step away to take phone calls. What was going on with him today?

Leilani looked down at her fingertips, an inexplicable flutter of unease swelling in her chest.

Out on the balcony, Callahan's silhouette looked exceptionally cold and stern against the night sky. He kept his voice low, but Leilani could still faintly make out a few fragmented words: "...wait for me to head over and handle it."

The call ended quickly. Callahan pushed the door open and returned inside, his expression thoroughly neutral. "Sorry about that. A minor emergency came up at the company."

Leilani looked up at him, her voice quiet. "Is it urgent? Are you heading to the office right now?"

Callahan smiled, reaching out to gently pinch her cheek. "Just a minor issue, nothing to worry about."
