Although Leilani's injuries weren't critically severe, she had lost quite a lot of blood. Besides, lying in a hospital bed all day was incredibly boring. Because of this, she would often drift off to sleep mid-conversation.
In her half-asleep state, Leilani felt someone gently take her hand. She opened her eyes slightly and saw Callahan sitting by the bed, his brow tightly furrowed as his thumb softly caressed the needle prick on the back of her hand.
This wasn't the first time Callahan had been unable to sleep and sought out the comfort of holding her hand in the middle of the night. At first, Leilani hadn't really understood why he did it. But later on, she had faintly guessed the reason.
"Did I wake you?" he asked in a low voice.
Leilani shook her head. "No."
Callahan hummed softly in response, but he didn't let go of her hand. If anything, he gripped it a little tighter.
Looking at his tense jawline, Leilani suddenly spoke up softly. "Callahan."
"Hmm?"
"Maybe you should go home."
Her injuries were mostly healed by now anyway, and she would probably be discharged in a few days. There was no need for Callahan to exhaust himself caring for her at the hospital.
"The table in this room is so tiny, and sitting here must be uncomfortable for you," Leilani continued. "Plus, you haven't been to the office in almost a week. Won't your uncle Talbot have a problem with that?"
Talbot Langley had always been at odds with Callahan. If he caught wind of this, he would undoubtedly use it against him, and Callahan would face criticism from the company's shareholders. Leilani didn't want him to neglect his work because of her.
Callahan looked up at her, his gaze deep and intense. "The company isn't as important as you."
Given all of Callahan's contributions to the Langley Group over the years, a mere week away from the office wouldn't matter much. It certainly wouldn't pose a significant threat to his position.
However, it was rare for Leilani to show such concern for him. Callahan naturally took advantage of the moment. He wanted to let her feel a little bad for him.
