Yvonne's eyes lit up, and a bright smile finally broke across her face. "Really? Then... then you should have some more! I'll bring you a different kind when I visit tomorrow."
The two of them stayed and chatted with Leilani for a while longer. They only got up to leave when a nurse came in to change Leilani's bandages and it became apparent that she was exhausted. Reluctantly, they prepared to go.
"Get some good rest, Leilani. We won't bother you anymore today. We'll come back tomorrow."
Judie patted her on the shoulder. "We're heading out."
After the two of them left, the hospital room returned to its peaceful quiet.
During the few days Leilani had been hospitalized, Callahan had stayed by her side, virtually inseparable.
Sunlight streamed through the sheer curtains, casting a warm glow across the crisp white bedsheets. Leilani rested against the headboard, flipping through a medical journal. Callahan sat in the chair next to the bed, his laptop resting on his knees. His fingers flew across the keyboard, but he glanced up at her every so often.
This was already Leilani's fourth day in the hospital. For the past few days, Callahan had watched over her, refusing to leave her side. Someone as busy and workaholic as him had actually brought his work to the hospital just to be near her.
At first, Leilani had felt somewhat uncomfortable with the arrangement. She was used to being independent, used to gritting her teeth and bearing the pain whenever she got hurt. Suddenly having someone watch her every move—someone who would even test the temperature of her water before handing it to her—gave her a strange sense of being overly protected.
Moreover, Callahan had a tremendous amount of work for his company, and working from a hospital room was far from convenient. Because he was dealing with matters late into the night, Leilani couldn't help but feel bad for him.
Yet, no matter how many times she asked him to go home, Callahan refused to leave.
Leilani didn't know what to do with him. After all, she was the one lying in the hospital bed, and she had stood Callahan up previously. So, for once, she actually felt a bit guilty.
But gradually, she found herself starting to get used to his presence.
