The Prison-Made Queen novel Chapter 44

It was a fair point. If this system was so precise, why hadn’t anyone heard of it?

Leilani watched Tamara’s clumsy performance and suddenly smiled.

“Milford.” She stopped looking at Tamara and stared straight into Milford’s eyes. “If the person lying in that bed were my family, I wouldn’t let a potential murderer go just because she cried a few tears. That’s not just stupid; it’s pathetically stupid.”

Leilani was practically telling him to his face that he was an idiot. Milford’s breath hitched.

“I don’t care about your relationship with Tamara.” Leilani’s tone was frigid. “But Yvonne is my patient. If someone tries to harm her, I won’t stand by and watch.”

She turned to Tamara, her gaze piercing. “Tamara, I’m warning you. Put away those vicious thoughts. If anything happens to Yvonne, you’ll be the first person I come for!”

Tamara felt a chill run down her spine under that stare and instinctively shrank behind Milford.

Milford was shaken by Leilani’s words, momentarily unable to refute them. Of course he cared about his sister, but Tamara had always been gentle and kind. How could she harm Yvonne?

Yet, Leilani’s warning forced a seed of doubt into his mind.

“Milford...” Tamara saw his silence and cried harder. “I really didn’t... How could she slander me like this...”

Milford’s thoughts were a tangible mess. Tamara’s faint sobbing echoed in his ears. He took a deep breath and eventually patted her shoulder. “Alright, let’s go back first.”

Leilani scoffed, tired of watching this farce, and turned to leave. At the door, she paused and threw back one last sentence without turning around.

“Milford, don’t wait until you’ve actually lost your family to regret it.”

Tamara left the facility with Milford, sobbing the whole way, but panic was gnawing at her insides. Leilani’s warning forced her to change her plans. Attacking Yvonne directly was too risky now; she had to shelve that idea temporarily.
