As soon as Leilani hung up, footsteps approached her door.
It was Abel, who had left earlier but had returned for some reason. He leaned against the doorframe, holding a bag of fruit, a teasing smile on his face. "Dr. Sloan, were you talking to your boyfriend just now?"
Leilani glanced at him. Her gaze was calm, yet it made Abel sense a vague danger.
"Were you eavesdropping on my call?"
"Hey, I wasn't eavesdropping!" Abel waved his hands hurriedly, looking innocent. "I just happened to buy a bag of fruit downstairs and wanted to come up and ask if you wanted some. I accidentally heard you talking to your boyfriend. I didn't mean to listen!"
He wouldn't stoop to eavesdropping. It was just a coincidence.
Abel leaned in closer, grinning as he gossiped. "Dr. Sloan, I didn't expect it. You look so cold and aloof, but when you talk to your boyfriend, you're so sweet? So gentle?"
Leilani shoved her phone into her pocket, her expression expressionless. "You heard wrong."
Abel blinked, putting on an 'I understand' face. "Right, right, I heard wrong!"
He wisely didn't press the issue and placed the bag of fruit on the table. "Here, fruit for you. Willa downstairs sells them; they're really sweet!"
Leilani looked at the apples and oranges in the bag and said simply, "Thanks."
Abel scratched his head and chuckled. "So... I'll come pick you up at nine tomorrow morning to go to Payton's?"
Leilani nodded. "Okay."
As the door opened, both of them shot their gazes toward him.
Then, when they failed to see the familiar figure behind Callahan, the light in their eyes dimmed in unison.
"Why are you alone?" Letty put down her coffee cup, unable to hide her disappointment. "Leilani didn't come back with you?"
Dante huffed. "You brat, I thought you were bringing Leilani home today. I even had the kitchen prepare all her favorite dishes."
Callahan felt helpless. He remembered telling Letty he would return to the estate for dinner, but he hadn't mentioned that Leilani was away on a trip.
Because he hadn't clarified, Dante and Letty—who were full of anticipation regarding Leilani—had misunderstood. Ever since Leilani had visited their home and the incident with Talbot’s family had occurred, they had been eager to see her again.
