Back at the hotel, Felix circled his grandparents, showing off his newly acquired father. He was eager to recount every single detail of the encounter to prove he was a little man of his word.
Clara's mom played along, eventually ushering Felix into the bathroom for a bath. The sound of splashing water and Felix's laughter as he played with Orange filled the room.
Clara's dad, sitting on the sofa, asked with restraint, “Are you okay?”
Clara nodded.
Soon after, the bathroom door opened, and Clara's mom carried Felix out, wrapped in a large towel, and tucked him directly into bed.
The little boy’s cheeks were flushed, and his eyes scanned the room.
“Mommy, isn’t Daddy Noah back yet?”
At the mention of his name, a sharp pain still lanced through Clara’s heart.
Clara's mom, who was organizing a suitcase, paused and straightened up to look at Clara. “That’s right, Clara, where is Noah? We haven’t seen him in a while. We haven’t heard from him all day.”
Clara’s dad asked, “Is he too busy with work at the hospital?”
The elderly couple was genuinely fond of Noah.
Though they had all come to Brighton City because of the distressing situation with Rhys, in their hearts, their daughter came first, Felix second, and Noah was a close third.
“He… he’s been…”
Clara was at a loss for words. In the hospital corridor, for Rhys’s sake, she had rejected Noah’s offer to go to Switzerland with him.
“Oh, you don’t understand, uncle, aunt,” Simon chimed in, flipping over from his spot on the sofa where he’d been scrolling through his phone. “Noah is the head of the whole department now. It’s nearly the end of the year. Academic conferences, year-end reviews, administrative evaluations—he has to be there for all of it.”
As he spoke, Simon grabbed an apple from the fruit bowl and took a bite, continuing indistinctly, “I heard from Clara that he’s been sleeping in his office these past few days, barely has time to eat. How could he possibly have time for us? We shouldn’t bother him. We can wait until he gets through this busy period.”
