He shook his head, his little face serious. “Mommy taught me that just saying sorry isn’t enough. It’s what you do that counts.”
“Then what should I do?”
Felix held up one hand. “I promised Mommy I would call you Dad because she said you were sick, and if I didn’t, you might not be able to rest in peace.”
Rhys: “…”
Clara: “…”
Clara cleared her throat, embarrassed. That was the general idea, but she certainly hadn’t been so blunt. What on earth had Simon been telling the child?
Felix continued, “But, if you want to be my dad, there’s a probationary period.”
Rhys, stunned, quickly agreed. “Okay, tell me. What’s the probation? Dad will agree to anything.”
“First, you’re not allowed to make Mommy cry again.” Felix held up one finger. “If Mommy cries because of you one more time, I’ll take her and Orange and run away from home, and I’ll never let you find us again.”
He already knew about running away from home at four years old.
Rhys felt a mix of pain and joy.
“Okay, I swear. I will never make Mommy cry again.”
“Second, you have to be a good patient.” Felix raised a second finger. “If the doctor tells you to take your medicine, you take it. If they tell you to sleep, you sleep. If you die, Mommy and I will be very sad, but I’ll forget about you in a few days.”
“Kids forget things really fast,” he added, twisting the knife.
The words were brutal.
Coming from a child, they were even more heart-wrenching.
But Rhys knew it was the boy’s own way of asking him to stay.
“Okay,” Rhys said, his voice hoarse. “I won’t die. I won’t let you forget your dad.”
“Third…”
Felix’s little brain whirred, but he couldn't think of anything else. “I’ll owe you the third one. I’ll tell you when I think of it.”
With that, he backed away to Clara’s side and looked up at her, as if seeking praise. “Mommy, I’m done.”
Clara stroked his head and turned to the man on the bed.
“Did you hear that?” Clara said coolly. “This is a chance your son is giving you, not me.”
Rhys nodded. “I heard. Clara, thank you… Thank you for bringing him here.”
Clara didn’t reply, instead checking the time.
