Simon frowned.

It was a hypothetical question, completely pointless. Besides, their problems ran much deeper than that one incident.

He should have mocked Rhys for daydreaming at a time like this.

But then he remembered the way Clara used to convince herself things were okay, and he decided to tell the truth.

"No."

"If you didn't have all that baggage, if you could have given her even half the attention you gave other people, she'd probably be on your second kid by now. Noah wouldn't have stood a chance."

In Clara's eyes, there had never been room for anyone but him.

Rhys laughed.

"Good."

He said, "I know what I have to do."

Simon was bewildered. "Know what you have to do? What are you talking about?"

Rhys was acting strangely.

He didn't explain. "Get out."

Baffled, Simon grumbled as he pushed the door open. "Who wants to sit in your stupid car anyway."

As soon as the door closed, Rhys started the engine.

"You heading home?" Simon asked through the window.

Rhys nodded, then shook his head. "Back to Brighton City."

Simon's eyes widened. "Are you crazy? Are you going to crash their wedding? The doctor told you to rest! What are you doing running around?"

"They're not married yet, so it doesn't count as crashing," Rhys said calmly. "Noah hasn't won yet."

Since she went there for Noah, he would go and tell Noah that he was Clara's past, and if she was willing, he could be her future, too.

The car shot forward, disappearing down Harbor Loop in the blink of an eye.

Simon stood there, choking on a mouthful of exhaust fumes. It took him a moment to process what had just happened.

It was nearly twelve hundred miles from here to Brighton City General Hospital.

There probably weren't any flights at this hour.

If Rhys drove, even if he floored it, it would take him over a dozen hours without stopping.

A dozen hours. Long enough for Noah and Clara to finish a candlelight dinner. Long enough for them to take two laps around the Ashton University campus. Long enough for Clara to say yes to a proposal.
