Clara had nothing left to say.

It was a stalemate.

When she came here, she'd wanted the truth, a reason to decide whether she should keep hating Rhys or try to forgive him.

Now, the truth was laid bare.

It wasn't betrayal, nor was it a simple case of having no other choice.

Rhys hadn't cheated on her. In a way, you could even say he was protecting her.

He didn't dare reach for her, afraid he'd drag her from the safety of the shore down into the depths with him. But he couldn't let go, either, because ever since he was thirteen, he had chained himself to Margot's sickbed.

But what good did any of it do?

Nine-year-old Margot was innocent, but so was twenty-one-year-old Clara.

The damage was done. No matter the original intent, the outcome was the same.

"You're sick."

Clara dropped the words and turned to leave.

"Aren't you angry?" Margot called out from behind her. "Clara, that's your son with Rhys! You both nearly died down there, all because of me!"

Clara paused, her hand on the doorknob.

After a few seconds, she turned her head slightly. "I'm not angry. I just feel sorry for Rhys."

"He had a miserable childhood, fought his way to adulthood thinking he could finally live like a decent human being, only to be shackled to someone like you for the rest of his life. That's truly worse than death."

"And one more thing—"

Clara pulled the door open, the cooler air from the hallway washing over her, dispelling her frustration.

"You're right. I can't win against you."

"Because no sane person would ever try to compete with a lunatic to see who's more miserable."

The door closed behind her.

Clara leaned against it, her stomach churning with a mixture of disgust and exhaustion.

The elevator chimed, its doors sliding open to an empty car. The mirrored walls reflected Clara's pale face back at her.

She exhaled and stepped inside.
