The Officer's Runaway Wife and Secret Son novel Chapter 340

"Of course not."

Margot leaned back against the sofa, her gaze becoming distant. "After you two got married, I went to a bar with some people and wanted to call him to pick me up. I called him, but he said he was busy and told me to go home by myself."

Clara's heart thudded heavily. She could already guess what had happened next.

"And?"

"And so, I was dragged into a private room."

Margot's tone was calm. "It wasn't a big deal, really. But it's not exactly something to be proud of. My health isn't good, and that ordeal landed me back in the hospital for half a month. I was even sent abroad afterward."

"Clara, do you know where he was that night? He was with you."

"Because he was with you, he hung up on me. I traded a night of peace and quiet for you."

Clara finally understood why Margot had suddenly gone abroad back then, and why Rhys had never spoken of it after her return.

"Are you trying to say I'm to blame for what happened to you?"

"No, Rhys is to blame," Margot said, shaking her head. "But he was afraid you'd blame yourself, so he never dared to mention it. If he hadn't been with you, he would have come to get me, and I wouldn't have gotten into trouble. Clara, it was you who took up his time, which led to my misfortune."

Clara retorted, "That was your own choice, and the fault of the attacker. It has nothing to do with Rhys, and even less to do with me."

Margot laughed. "That's the logic, but conscience doesn't work that way. Don't you get it yet, Clara? As long as he's by your side, every time he's good to you, every time you smile at him, he will be reminded of me."

"Loving you feels like a betrayal of his own conscience."

Margot stared at Clara, her words deliberate. "As long as I'm alive, he can never love you with a clear conscience."

"Clara, you are the light, and you're too bright. He's been in the gutter for too long; he can't stand the light."

Listening to her, Clara felt a tightness in her chest that made it hard to breathe.

She had always thought Rhys's feelings for Margot were a matter of childhood friendship, of favoritism, of some unspoken intimacy.

She had hated him, resented him.
