Under Roger's intense gaze, Stella found herself blindly accepting his contact request on her phone.
"I've still got work at the forensics lab, so I'm heading back." Having successfully secured her number, Roger was in an exceptional mood. "And don't you dare delete my number the second you're out of sight."
Work? Stella checked the time; it was already seven in the evening. "You have to work overtime?" Her eyes drifted down to his bandaged hand, a small frown forming. "The doctor said you need to rest." He was battered, and his right hand was nowhere near fully healed.
"Worried about me?" Roger's eyes narrowed slightly, a deeply affectionate gaze locking onto her.
"You got hurt trying to save me." Stella ducked her head, her voice barely a whisper. For once, she didn't instantly try to argue with him. The guilt was eating her alive.
"Want me to heal faster?" Roger leaned down to catch her eye, a low chuckle escaping him. "Then keep having dinner with me. Being around you puts me in a good mood." And a good mood meant a better appetite, which would naturally speed up his recovery.
Stella knew exactly what he was trying to pull. She fought a smile, muttering under her breath, "What kind of ridiculous logic is that?"
"Heh." Roger ruffled her hair with a soft laugh. "It's getting windy. Head inside."
Stella nodded and walked toward the gates with her cake. She barely made it a few steps before pausing. She turned back to face him, her voice tinged with nervous concern. "Make sure you change the dressing on your hand."
"I will." Roger nodded, the smile in his eyes deepening into an overwhelming, unapologetic adoration.
He didn't move an inch until her silhouette completely vanished into the campus.
"Roger, is everything alright?" the driver asked cautiously, utterly shell-shocked to see the famously cold, emotionless doctor smiling like a man in love.
"She's learning how to care," Roger murmured. By the time he turned back to the driver, his signature icy demeanor had returned. "Let's go."
