"Take her and leave!" Stella begged.

Roger's broad shoulders tensed, but his hands didn't stop moving.

"Dr. Roger!" Stella's voice cracked, thick with desperate tears. "The mountain is about to collapse! The whole slope is going to wash away. I'm stuck, I can't get out in time. If you don't go right now, we're all going to die!"

Roger completely ignored her. He grabbed a jagged piece of wood and used it to pry away the dense, compacted mud.

He crouched in the sludge. His usually impeccable short hair was plastered to his forehead, and his crisp white shirt was utterly ruined. His hands were quickly becoming a scraped, bruised mess from the frantic digging.

"Did you hear me?" Stella's heart pounded violently against her ribs. Tears streamed down her face, mixing with the heavy rain. "You can't save me. You're just going to get yourself killed! Why throw your life away for nothing? Just go live your life!"

Roger threw the broken branch aside and went back to digging with his bare hands, tearing his skin even further.

"Roger..."

When he didn't stop, Stella looked up at the terrifying cascade of loose gravel and soil tumbling down from above. Finally, she broke, screaming his name over the howling wind. "Roger!"

Hearing his first name, Roger froze for a split second. He quickly regained his focus, glancing up at her as his hands kept working. His glasses had been washed away by the rain, and he looked drenched, yet he was still impossibly handsome.

"Why am I worth this to you? You're risking your life for nothing!" Stella grabbed his wrist, using every ounce of strength she had left to push him away. "I don't want to owe you! Go!"

"You are worth it." Roger leaned forward, his face inches from hers. They were so close that their ragged, heated breaths mingled in the freezing rain.

Worth it? Stella's breath hitched. She stared at him in disbelief, her pale lips trembling. "But you're going to die."
