Montara School.
Nestled in the southwest mountains of Eldoria, the area was heavily forested and the terrain was rugged.
By the time Stella followed the villager to her destination, it was only four in the afternoon.
But due to the steep mountains, the sky was already beginning to darken.
Pale mist clung to the peaks, bringing a sharp drop in temperature.
Stella had checked the weather before coming and knew the days were warm while the nights were freezing.
But she hadn't expected the chill to be this biting.
"Stella, why don't you rest first," Clay, the village principal, said as he led her to her room, his weathered face crinkling into a warm smile. "Don't worry about the cold. A kind donor sent over some brand-new bedding a few days ago. It'll keep you nice and warm."
A kind donor?
Stella took a look around.
The room was small, but it felt incredibly cozy. It was obvious someone had put real care into setting it up.
"Thank you,"
Stella said softly, setting her suitcase down.
"Get some rest."
Clay nodded politely and stepped out, pulling the door shut behind him.
Stella sat on the edge of the bed, running her hand over the soft sheets. She looked through the screen window at the bright, silvery moonlight.
Suddenly, her mind was yanked back to Lamplighter Village.
The memory hit her like a physical blow—the monstrous orphanage director pinning her down, her clothes being ripped away...
The sharp edge of the blade slicing into her skin, inch by inch...
The manic, deafening roars and cruel laughter echoing in her ears...
The deeper she sank into the memory, the harder it became to breathe. In a panic, her trembling fingers brushed against the candy in her pocket.
Her body went rigid as a sliver of rationality pierced through the terror.
She pulled out the handful of candies, gripping them tightly in her palm as if they were a lifeline.
Slowly, her racing heart began to calm.
Yet, her eyes remained hollow, the spark in them fading into a dull ache.
Meeting him had been a mistake from the start.
