Bodies had started to rot, and when the floodwaters mixed with all those dangerous chemicals, they created something completely new and bizarre. That strange substance seeped into the soil and was taken up by the roots of local plants. People didn’t realize what was happening—they just kept eating the crops, unknowingly poisoning themselves. Their immune systems broke down, and soon enough, a wave of exhaustion swept through the community. Lethargy syndrome, they called it, and it could spread from one person to another just by breathing the same air. With the heat beating down, it took less than two weeks for the number of sick people to skyrocket.
Once they figured out the cause, the plan was clear. Cut off the source, keep the sick and healthy separated, and care for everyone until things settled. With time, as long as people recovered, the outbreak would be under control.
“Charlotte, the institute’s made a few antidotes using those formulas you gave us,” Dr. David said. “We just need a little clinical time to make sure they’re safe.”
Charlotte gave a soft nod, her eyes drifting over to where Anthony sat at a desk, absorbed in some paperwork.
“You don’t need to push yourself so hard anymore,” Dr. David added, his eyes gentle with concern as he looked at her drawn, pale face. “Take a break. And a nurse will be by soon to draw your blood.”
“No matter what the results are, please stay calm.”
He tried to muster a reassuring smile. “We’ve found out what’s causing it. We’ll figure out a treatment. I promise.”
“Okay,” Charlotte answered quietly.
As soon as the call ended, she slipped out of bed, padded over to Anthony’s side, and peeked over his shoulder. He noticed her before she could read a word and quickly closed his laptop.
Then he turned around and, without hesitation, pulled her into his arms. His forehead pressed against hers, testing her temperature with a tenderness that made her chest ache.
She was still burning up, but at least it wasn’t as bad as the day before.
“No matter what happens, I’m not leaving you,” he murmured, voice rough around the edges. “Even if it’s the end... I’ll be right here.”
Charlotte lowered her gaze, tempted to steal a quick kiss, but the fever still clung to her. She hesitated, then stepped back instinctively. “I’m going for the blood test. Don’t get too close.”
