“Charlotte, come sit down.”
When Charlotte mentioned she’d run away from home, Stella didn’t question her. She went straight to the fridge and grabbed a piece of cake.
“Strawberry and mango, double-layered. Your favorite.”
Back when they lived together, Charlotte always wanted something sweet whenever she was upset. Stella had even learned to bake, just so she’d always have some treats ready in case Charlotte decided to show up unannounced.
“Thanks.” Charlotte pinched Stella’s cheek softly, then picked up the cake and ate it, barely paying attention.
“Are you going home tonight?” Stella crouched beside her, resting her chin in her hand and watching her with quiet warmth.
“No.” Charlotte’s answer was short and her tone a little cold. “Let that old man chill out for a bit.”
“Alright.” Stella smiled and nodded, then went to get the guest room bed ready.
Once she’d eaten, Charlotte pulled out her phone and called the Isle of Veil Research Institute.
“Charlotte.”
G5’s voice came through, gentle and full of love. “I was just about to call you.”
“Really?” Charlotte smiled politely. “Go ahead, Grandma. You first.”
“We’ve made a lot of progress on the genetic mutation antidote,” G5 said, her voice steady but caring. “But Charlotte, you’re already more than three months pregnant. If you take the antidote now, we can’t be sure it’ll work for the babies too.”
It was clear what she meant. The babies might have already been affected by the mutation. The antidote might only help Charlotte, not them.
“Charlotte, what I mean is…” G5 asked softly.
