“We always do things your way, but today, it’s our turn,” Kenneth said, pulling Emily into the dressing room with him. He sounded serious, but there was a mischievous sparkle in his eyes. “We finally have a shot at making Anthony sweat a little, so don’t even think about ruining it.”
“Exactly, Charlotte, just let us handle this,” Andrew jumped in as he bounded over, arms full of random tools and props for their little barricade operation. His excitement was practically bouncing off the walls. “We’re doing this for your benefit. Got to make sure your position in the household is secure.”
Household status?
Charlotte couldn’t help blinking in disbelief. She looked slightly exasperated. Seriously, was there even any further down Anthony’s position could go at home?
“Charlotte, just let them have their fun.” Emily stepped close, her warm gaze settling on Charlotte, who really did look stunning in her bridal gown. Emily grinned. “Honestly, I want to see how Anthony handles all this.”
Charlotte parted her lips, but no words came out.
Their laughter and chatter filled the room, until the sound of engines carried up from downstairs.
“That’s Anthony!” Shirley’s voice shot up as she leaned over by the window, squinting at the street. “And he didn’t just come alone… look at all those cars.” She tried to count but quickly gave up. The line stretched so far she couldn’t see where it ended.
“Lock the doors!”
At the sound, Kenneth bolted out of the room, yelling over his shoulder, “From the main gate all the way to Lottie’s room. Block every single door!”
Donald, Roger, Kenneth, Andrew, and Parrish all rushed to their chosen posts, standing guard and making sure absolutely nothing was getting through.
Charlotte didn’t bother with any of it. She found a small plate of pastries and nibbled on one, unhurried. Noticing she hadn’t seen Newell anywhere, she picked up her phone and scrolled to her social app.
Nine: ?
Newell: Don’t worry. I won’t let you down.
