Charlotte glanced back and picked up a custard-filled pastry, holding it out for Stella. Stella accepted it without hesitation, her expression soft and satisfied. “Someone’s looking out for me now. What about you?”

If a man saw her body, she figured he’d only feel revulsion.

“I don’t like being around other people,” Stella said, looking at Charlotte. There was the faintest hint of a smile. “I already have you and Shirley. Isn’t that enough?”

She didn’t want anyone else in her life. Especially not men. It wasn’t about thinking she was better than them. She just couldn’t bring herself to care. The thought of being around men made her uncomfortable down to her bones.

“Alright.”

Charlotte knew what she’d been through. She understood how deep those old wounds ran and how time was what Stella needed most. She didn’t press the issue. Instead, she switched topics.

“Charlotte, come look at this.”

Stella scrolled on her phone, her eyes going big as she landed on a news story. Charlotte leaned in and spotted their wedding splashed all over the headlines of every major news outlet. It was everywhere, and it was very clear that Anthony had allowed it to happen.

“And look outside…”

Even calm, collected Charlotte couldn’t help but show her excitement. She jumped up, craning her neck to point outside. “The whole city is red.”
