The whole hall went quiet in a heartbeat. For a long time, nobody spoke. Daniel stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, so still and pale he almost faded into the light streaming through the glass. Finally, he turned around. His face was as white as paper.
Andrew had been right all along. Daniel had never seen his own mistakes.
“Mom.” Daniel’s knees suddenly buckled, and he dropped to the ground in front of Patricia. He knelt there, head bowed, voice hoarse and heavy. “Andrew’s mother has done so many reckless things over the years. I should have stopped her, but... I loved her. So, I looked the other way.”
He took a deep breath, his voice barely steady. “Because I let things slide, she ended up doing something awful. She almost got someone killed. Now the Blair family’s name is on the line.”
Patricia rubbed her forehead, letting out a long sigh. “This isn’t all your fault. She made her own choices too.”
“I’m staying out of this,” Patricia continued. “Once the investigation finishes, we’ll handle it however the truth demands.”
“As soon as we have the results, I’ll divorce her. I won’t let her drag our family’s name through the mud.”
It was the only way to give Shirley the closure she deserved. And maybe it was time Daniel faced the consequences for everything he had ignored.
Across the room, Lavinia and Matthew met each other's eyes. They both frowned, shaking their heads slightly with helpless acceptance.
Matthew had always cherished his wife—everyone knew that. Seeing him refuse to defend her, not even offering a single gentle word, hurt more than anyone could say. She must have really broken his heart.
Daniel turned to Lavinia and Matthew, his voice steady and sincere. “I’ll handle everything. This won’t get in the way of the wedding.”
Then he looked at Andrew. “You take care of Shirley. Tell her she has nothing to worry about. None of this is her fault, and nobody blames her for any of it.”
Andrew nodded, silent but determined. After quietly saying goodbye to the elders, he left the hall, moving like a ghost, his face completely colorless.
