The next few days were non-stop for Charlotte. Mornings started early at the university, and by the time she got home at night, she was completely wiped out.
After wrapping up her experiments one evening, she peeled off her radiation suit and tossed her mask and gloves in the trash. She grabbed a pump of hand sanitizer and absentmindedly rubbed it between her fingers, only to look up and catch Glenn watching her.
“Charlotte, you…” Glenn’s eyes flicked from her hands to her stomach, his face suddenly serious.
The radiation levels in today’s experiment weren’t even high enough to justify wearing the suit. Unless... Well, unless you were pregnant. But watching how casually she moved, so relaxed and unaware—it didn’t fit the image at all. Maybe he was just overthinking it. Charlotte was so young. If she really were pregnant, the guy responsible would have to be a monster. He shook the thought off. He was definitely imagining things.
“Hm?” Charlotte finished rubbing in the sanitizer, then stuffed her hands in her pockets and tipped her chin up, looking at him with a curious little smile.
“It’s nothing.” Glenn tried to recover, stepping over with a big grin and handing her a thermos. “Honestly, we wouldn’t be making progress this fast without you.”
“No big deal,” Charlotte replied, taking a sip of the hot water. Her eyes flicked to the clock on the wall. Twenty minutes to go until Anthony came to pick her up.
“Charlotte…” Glenn hesitated for ages before finally blurting out, “I heard The Cabinda University wants you to join their medical school?”
He’d been holding that question back forever, never quite brave enough to ask. On paper, Charlotte was still just a student at Kingswood. But everyone knew how talented she was. Even the professors admitted she could run the show just as well as any of them.
If she really did leave for The Cabinda University… what would they do? How would they keep up with her gone?
“Oh?” Charlotte looked up, acting like it was no big deal. “Yeah, they did reach out.”
