Dorothy’s eyes turned icy at the thought. It would be perfect if Charlotte never made it into the Blair family.

After so many days away from campus, Charlotte was up way too early. She leaned on her hands, slouched at the breakfast table, looking like she’d rather still be in bed.
“So, what’s happening at school today?” Anthony asked. He cracked an egg, peeled it perfectly, and dropped it into her bowl. Then he added some sugar to her lemon water, just how she liked it.
Charlotte took a bite of toast. “What do you think? They’re basically using me as free labor.”
Now that she was back, everyone seemed terrified she’d vanish again. Glenn had lined up a whole list of tricky problems for her to sort out. She ate like a bird but worked more than anyone else.
Anthony just chuckled, then reached over to gently wipe the corner of her mouth with a napkin. His eyes were soft, and there was a hint of a smile. “Poor thing, huh?”
Charlotte blinked, shoving more bread in her mouth. She sounded tired but still managed to roll her eyes. “Seriously, this is all thanks to your generosity. Sending all that fancy equipment to Kingswood, making me go there and show everyone how it works.”
Most of the professors at Kingswood had no clue what to do with that new stuff. She had to be there and walk them through each step. Sometimes, she honestly just wanted to sock Anthony right in the shoulder.

After breakfast, Anthony drove Charlotte to campus. On the way, they ran into Shirley. Judging by the way she was half-running with her bag, she’d probably overslept and was in a rush.
The second Shirley noticed their car, she stopped. When she recognized who was inside, a huge smile lit up her face, even though she was out of breath and her cheeks were flushed from running. “Charlotte, Anthony, Hans, good morning!”
“Get in,” Charlotte said with a nod toward the passenger seat. Shirley wasted no time climbing in.
