That evening, Kenneth wrapped up work and headed back to The Gates Estate. Exhausted, he dropped onto the sofa and lit a cigarette, lost in his thoughts. The quiet was broken by a knock at the door.
“Come in,” he called out.
The door opened, and as soon as Kenneth saw who it was, he quickly stubbed out the cigarette and cracked the window to clear the air.
“Not ready to call it a night yet?” Kenneth sat up straighter, pushing aside the heaviness that had been weighing on his face, putting on that trademark easygoing grin.
Charlotte walked in and flopped onto the couch, shooting a quick look at the ashtray piled with cigarette butts. She raised an eyebrow and got right to the point. “I need a favor.”
“Go ahead,” Kenneth replied.
“There’s an opening for the male lead in Storm,” Charlotte said. “You’d be perfect for it.” She watched him closely, waiting to see how he’d react.
“Acting?” Kenneth repeated, caught off guard. He fell silent, thinking it over. Acting wasn’t out of the question for him.
The real issue was the female lead. Emily.
Ever since that night he found out she liked someone else, he hadn’t been able to shake the awkwardness whenever she was around. Now the thought of acting beside her just made his stomach twist even more. He doubted he could keep his head straight if they had to play a couple.
“Just asking for your opinion,” Charlotte continued, not pushing, just calm as ever. She took out a stack of photos and spread them out on the coffee table. “If you’re not interested, there are plenty of others. Lots of guys have already volunteered.”
Kenneth flipped through the photos. Every guy was handsome and talented, a real catch for any production.
The more he looked, the more his mood soured. Each one looked like he'd stepped straight out of a daydream, the kind of guy you could easily fall for after spending enough time together on set.
He shut the pile of photos. “I’ll think about it and let you know tomorrow.”
“Sounds good.” Charlotte nodded and stood up. As she left, a sly smile touched her lips. “Casting’s tomorrow at Apex Mediaworks. If you change your mind, just show up and audition.”
She was confident she saw right through him. Kenneth definitely had feelings for Emily.
