This was the kind of news that blew everything up. Less than ten minutes after the story went live, every detail of that girl’s background was out there for the world to see. The internet instantly split in two. People argued nonstop, everyone taking sides and throwing around theories. They all pointed out she came from money, that her family had invested in the company. Plus, no one could deny she was beautiful. When she first joined the industry, she’d even appeared in one of Kenneth’s new music videos. Now, those clickbait accounts kept cutting and remixing clips from that MV, piecing together a whole love story between the two of them, even though they barely knew each other. It made all the rumors about them dating seem a lot more legit.
Emily sat frozen on her bed, feeling absolutely numb as she scrolled through the nonstop flood of online comments. She could feel her body getting cold, inside and out. Kenneth was never the kind of guy to fool around with women. Over the years, hardly anyone had even tried to get close to him. For him to be hugging someone like that… the only explanation Emily could think of was that he let it happen.
Staring at the photo of them together and remembering that awkward moment she’d caught at the studio earlier, Emily felt something tighten painfully in her chest.
She’d tried to figure him out before and always sensed Kenneth didn’t like her back. Was it because he already liked someone else? The more she thought about it, the worse she felt. Her eyes blurred, tears rolling down her cheeks and dotting her phone until she couldn’t even see the posts anymore. That’s when it finally hit her—he had someone he cared about now. She couldn’t just hang around him like she used to.
She’d had a crush on this man for almost ten years, but he was never going to be hers. So be it, she decided. If he was happy, maybe that was enough.
Dragging herself to the bathroom, Emily splashed her face with cold water. She looked in the mirror at her red, puffy eyes, then walked back to her room. Typing into the comment section, she wrote, If Kenneth likes her, then we should support them. But her finger hovered over the send button, frozen. After a few seconds, she just couldn’t do it. Slowly, Emily backed out, deleting her words. She tossed her phone to the side, curled up under her blanket and hugged her pillow, whispering through quiet sobs, “From now on, I’m done liking you.”
