“That’s a relief,” Amy said, letting out a long breath.
Jay’s face stayed as calm as ever. He just glanced over at the emergency room doors.
Petty seemed stable. Franco, on the other hand…
The elevator dinged and Galen hurried toward them, out of breath. “Jay, how are Franco and Petty?”
He had spent all night in the ICU. Abacus hadn’t been well after midnight, and Galen hadn’t left his side once. But Galen wasn’t Franco. No matter how he tried to comfort the crying child, nothing worked. In desperation, he found an old voice message from Franco and played it on his phone. The second Abacus heard Franco’s voice, the tears finally stopped.
The problem was, that voice message made Galen want to crawl into a hole.
I’ll find you a good doctor, man. No shame in having a little trouble in that department.
The ICU was quiet, with only the nurses tending to Abacus moving gently around them. But Abacus needed to hear the message over and over again to calm down.
Jay noticed how exhausted Galen looked and figured things must be bad for Abacus.
“Petty isn’t seriously injured,” Jay said, his tone even. “But they’re still trying to save Franco.”
Galen’s frown deepened, worry in his eyes as he looked back at the ER. When Franco had told him to look after his son last night, Galen had felt deep down that things were about to get messy, but he hadn’t expected all this.
He thought of Abacus finally getting some sleep and felt his heart squeeze. How did this family get stuck in so much pain?
“What about Laura?” Galen asked, voice tight.
He didn’t care about Laura herself, just whether her bone marrow might save his nephew. The thought of that awful woman being connected to his nephew made his skin crawl, but when a life was at stake, nothing else mattered.
Once his nephew was safe, Laura could vanish from the earth for all he cared.
