"How are you? Are you hurt? Are you absolutely sure the car that got hit was a decoy? You're not lying to me, are you?"
"I swear. If you don't believe me, ask Raymond. He orchestrated the whole thing and saw this coming—otherwise, I really wouldn't be able to call you right now."
"Then... what about the person who took your place? Are they okay? Are their injuries life-threatening?"
Even though she didn't know the man, he had taken the hit meant for her husband. Financial compensation aside, it was an incredibly dangerous thing to do.
It was only human nature to be concerned.
"The bodyguard is highly trained and knew what to expect. He suffered some minor injuries, but his life isn't in danger," Joseph explained.
"Thank God."
Vivica murmured the words, half-believing him but still trembling with anxiety.
"It's too dangerous for you to be out there. Just come home and let another lawyer handle the rest."
She couldn't bear the thought of the man she loved putting his life on the line. It left her sick with worry.
If anything happened to him, how would she ever face his parents?
The Baird family had already lost one son.
"Joseph, listen to me. Please, just come back. Let someone else take over. Even if you don't think about me, think about your parents. They already lost your brother; they can't lose you too!"
Her voice was practically begging.
If it hadn't been so late with no flights left, she would have flown out there herself today to drag him back.
Hearing her so frantic, Joseph let out a helpless, quiet sigh in his heart.
"It's fine. Raymond has assigned several bodyguards to me. Plus—after what they tried today, Sullivan and Sean Chase are going to be arrested very soon."
Joseph instantly regretted his honesty. Had he known it would upset her this much, he would have made up a different excuse.
"No, they'll do whatever it takes to escape the law. They'll use any dirty trick they have."
