Sullivan choked on his words, his face draining of color before flushing violently.
The servers were still trying to bring out food, but Sullivan and his entourage were completely blocking the walkway.
Glancing up, Joseph offered a dry dismissal. "If you'll excuse us, Mr. Sullivan Chase. There aren't enough chairs at this table for you anyway, so I won't ask you to stay."
Sean threw out his arm, jabbing a finger aggressively in Joseph's direction. "Don't get cocky, Joseph! We'll drag you down with us if we have to!"
Joseph stared at the offending finger, his eyes dropping ten degrees. "Clearly, you didn't learn your lesson the last time."
A look of sheer terror flashed across Sean's face as he yanked his hand back.
The last time he had pointed at Joseph, the man had grabbed his index finger and nearly snapped it in half.
The agonizing pain was still fresh in his memory.
Seeing his brother instantly morph from a tough guy into a trembling coward, Sullivan shot him a furious glare. "Keep your mouth shut! You're an absolute embarrassment!"
Seeing how aggressively Sullivan was posturing, Joseph assumed the man was about to drop an actual threat.
Instead, after scolding his brother, Sullivan snapped his attention back to Raymond and Joseph. "Name your price. How much cash is it going to take to make this whole thing go away?"
Raymond blinked in sheer disbelief before bursting into laughter.
Joseph found it equally absurd.
It was no wonder these two were so uneducated.
They genuinely had no clue how the real world worked.
After everything that had been uncovered, they still thought they could just bribe the opposing lawyers.
They were looking at severe, top-tier felony charges.
"Mr. Sullivan Chase, you should probably head home and get your affairs in order. Then turn yourselves in, and you might get a lighter sentence."
Joseph offered the advice with mocking sincerity.
Sullivan physically swayed on his feet.
Sean's legs began to tremble uncontrollably. "Sullivan, what... what are we going to do? He definitely has the..."
"Shut up!"
Sullivan barked. Throwing a venomous, murderous glare at Joseph, he spun on his heel and stormed out of the restaurant, his crew trailing behind him.
Around five that evening, Joseph headed for the airport.
Before he left, out of an abundance of caution, he and Raymond devised a backup plan.
En route to the airport, his phone buzzed. It was Vivica.
"Hey. Are you off the clock?" Catching her caller ID, a warm smile spread across Joseph's face, though his eyes remained sharp, scanning the traffic through the car window.
"Yup, done for the day. No overtime on the first day back. Clocking out on time feels amazing."
Her voice was light and airy, signaling a genuinely good mood.
"Have the driver take you straight home. I'm still tied up. It'll probably be after ten before I'm finished."
