“Oh…” Chaim said, not quite understanding.
After Raymond's reminder, Hayes realized his previous topic had been inappropriate and quickly changed his tone as he looked at Vivica. “Well… let’s not dwell on the past. I hear you’re married now, and your son is already three.”
Raymond jumped in immediately. “That’s right, Hayes. And look, Vivica’s son is so handsome, smart, and well-behaved.”
Hayes looked at Chaim, and his gaze naturally fell upon Joseph. “And this is…?”
Raymond started to speak, but Vivica cut in first. “He’s my husband, Joseph.”
“Oh, I’ve heard. A very famous lawyer.” Hayes’s tone was polite, and he followed up with immense gratitude. “Vivica was so lucky to have met you, to escape that first failed marriage. I also heard you were instrumental in getting the child's treatment. Mr. Baird, you are a great benefactor to the Chase family.”
Joseph offered a faint smile. In contrast to Vivica’s complex emotions, his attitude was much more straightforward. “There’s no need for thanks. It was fate that brought Vivica and me together.”
“Indeed,” Hayes agreed. He looked at Joseph’s serious and formidable presence, momentarily at a loss for words. He had once been a titan of the business world, but the car accident had turned him into an invalid. Detached from society for so many years, he felt like a walking corpse with no advice to offer the younger generation, especially not a successful young man from a prominent family like Joseph. If he were to lecture him, it would only seem ridiculous.
