The doctor frowned. “Are you trying to conceive?”
“Yes.”
“Well… a local anesthetic shouldn't have any effect. If you're really worried, we can reduce the dosage, but that might compromise its effectiveness, so it will be a bit painful.”
The doctor, wearing a mask, was already holding scissors and a fine suture thread for the stitches.
Vivica was terrified of pain, but when it came to pregnancy, she couldn't take even the slightest risk.
This child, once conceived, wouldn't just be for themselves; they would carry the hope of saving Chaim.
After a moment's thought, Vivica nodded. “It's okay. I can bear it.”
It was only three stitches, after all. It would be over quickly.
“Alright, then.” The doctor agreed, administering only a small amount of anesthetic.
The anesthetic injection itself was painful. Vivica clenched her fists, her whole body tense.
Harvey was waiting outside when Joseph called him again, asking about the accident.
“There's a police officer here. I'll just have him speak to you directly.”
Harvey informed his friend, then walked over to the officer with the phone, explaining the situation.
When the officer heard Joseph’s name, he paused. “Joseph Baird?”
“Yes. The woman who was just brought in is Mr. Baird's wife. He'd like to know the details of the accident.”
“Of course.” The officer immediately took the phone and spoke politely. “Mr. Baird, this is Officer Tanner, handling the accident scene.”
The Baird family was one of the most prominent and wealthy families in Riverdale. Anyone working in public service, while not necessarily knowing the tycoons personally, would have heard the name. It carried weight in town.
“Officer Tanner, this is Joseph. The person injured in the crash is my wife. I need to know the cause of the accident and who is at fault.”
Joseph was a lawyer. After his initial concern for his wife's safety, his mind immediately turned to establishing liability.
At that moment, he simply assumed it was an ordinary traffic accident.
He was also naively thinking about how to handle compensation or claims after fault was determined.
Officer Tanner explained, “It was at the intersection of Mayfair Boulevard and Merry Avenue. Mrs. Baird was driving normally when the other vehicle ran a red light and hit her directly. Her car was struck on the rear quarter panel, and because the other car was going so fast, her vehicle spun several times in the middle of the road before crashing into the median strip and stopping.”
“There were multiple witnesses to the accident, and with the traffic camera at the intersection, the sequence of events is very clear. We've already determined the other driver is entirely at fault. Mrs. Baird reacted quickly, swerving to avoid a direct side impact. Although her car is nearly totaled, her injuries aren't too severe. You shouldn't worry too much, Mr. Baird.”
