The heart that had been wound tight for months finally found a warm sanctuary, allowing her to completely relax.
“Just wait until you find a rich man, then you can enjoy this life every day,” Vivica said, picking up on her friend’s comment. “What about Harvey? You’re both doctors, you’d have plenty to talk about.”
“Don’t say things like that, he might hear you,” Quintina quickly shushed her, leaning in to whisper, “Two doctors, both busy enough to never be home? That’s no way to live a life together.”
It was a fair point. If their on-call shifts alternated, they might barely see each other.
After some hot coffee and roasted tangerines, Sherman bustled in and out, and soon the table was filled with dishes. The group moved to sit down for dinner.
“Today is to celebrate the happy union of Joseph and Vivica, so I’ll take the liberty of proposing the first toast,” Sherman announced once the server had left, promptly pouring himself a glass.
“To Joseph and Vivica, I wish you a lifetime of happiness,” Sherman said, raising his glass.
Vivica, who had been feeling relaxed, tensed up at the formal toast, her expression suddenly reserved.
Joseph filled his own glass while instructing Vivica, “You shouldn’t drink. Stick to the juice.”
With Chaim there, it wasn’t wise for both of them to drink. If they were both tipsy and something happened to the child, it would be a disaster. Vivica understood his reasoning, but his words still warmed her heart. Every protective gesture he made magnified his image in her eyes.
“Thank you, Sherman,” Joseph said as they both stood up.
“Thank you, Sherman,” Vivica echoed.
Unexpectedly, Chaim also raised his little cup, mimicking his parents. “Thank you, Sherman!” he chirped.
Everyone laughed.
