"Yes, I can do that," Vivica agreed. She estimated that by then, she would be emotionally ready to meet the parents who had abandoned her.
"That's wonderful," Raymond said, his relief palpable. "I'll wait to hear from you. Whenever you're ready to travel, just let me know. I'll book your round-trip tickets and personally pick you up from the airport."
"Okay, I'll be in touch when I can get away."
After ending the call, Vivica stood there for a long moment, lost in thought. She considered sending Joseph a message but decided against it. He was likely still busy, and knowing this would only add to his worries. She would tell him at dinner tonight.
She turned and went back into the hospital room, where Quintina's questions were unavoidable.
Looking into her best friend's concerned eyes, Vivica dropped the bombshell calmly. "I think my birth parents have surfaced. But I don't want to see them."
"What?" Quintina was, as expected, completely shocked. "How… how did they find you? Where are they?"
It was a long story, but with time to kill, Vivica recounted everything, starting from her recent business trip.
Quintina's eyes grew wider and wider with each new detail.
"So, let me get this straight," she said, trying to process it all. "Your birth parents are now childless, except for you. They're wealthy, which makes you a secret heiress, and now they want you to come home and inherit their fortune?"
Vivica gave a wry smile. "Not necessarily. I haven't even met them. This could all just be a big mistake."
In a world of billions, she still found it hard to believe that something so lucky, and yet so unlucky, could happen to her.
"No, I trust your and Mr. Baird's judgment. If you both think it's true, then it must be." Quintina sighed. "It should be a happy occasion, but if they really abandoned you because they wanted a boy, I wouldn't want to see them either, if I were you."
