Fletcher stepped forward, blocking Vivica’s path.
“Can I help you?” Vivica asked, her voice calm.
Fletcher’s gaze was intense, his eyes immediately drawn to the dazzling diamond on her left ring finger.
“You married him?” he asked, his head snapping up as his eyes widened in shock.
“Yes, we were married this morning,” Vivica said honestly, seeing no reason to hide it. This was the perfect way to make him finally give up.
Just as she expected, a wave of pain washed over Fletcher’s face. He looked as if he’d taken a physical blow, his shoulders slumping in defeat.
Vivica glanced at him once more, then moved to walk around him without another word.
“Vivica,” Fletcher called out, turning to face her retreating back. His voice was pleading. “My father… he’s not going to make it. He wants to see Chaim. Can you please bring him to the hospital with me?”
Vivica’s steps faltered, and she turned back to him. “Isn’t your father still in the ICU?”
“He is, but the doctors say his heart is failing. Keeping him on life support is just prolonging the inevitable and wasting money.”
And Fletcher, drowning in debt, certainly didn't have the money to keep Dylan Sanford alive. Even if he did, it was a miserable way to exist; letting go seemed a kinder option.
Vivica frowned, noticing the bloodshot whites of his eyes. She couldn’t bring herself to trust him, fearing it was just another one of his traps.
But what if it was true? While she felt no familial connection to Dylan, he had always been good to Chaim. In the end, she couldn’t bring herself to refuse a man at the end of his life.
“Does your father know that Chaim is a Baird?” Vivica asked suddenly.
“No, he’s been in the ICU this whole time. Who would have told him?” Fletcher explained flatly.
