A box of that shape could only mean one thing: a ring.
She opened it. Sure enough, nestled inside the royal blue velvet box was a dazzling diamond ring. The main stone was enormous, its firework-like brilliance catching the light.
Vivica’s eyes widened as she turned to him. “What… what is the meaning of this?”
“I’ve made an appointment for us to get married tomorrow at nine a.m. This is your wedding ring. You should wear it from now on; it’ll save you a lot of trouble,” Joseph stated matter-of-factly, as if getting married and presenting a giant diamond were as casual as noting the weather.
“This ring is too expensive. It's dangerous to wear. I can't accept it,” Vivica said, closing the box and handing it back.
“You’re overthinking it. It’s a lab-grown diamond. They’re quite cheap. It’s just for show.”
“Really?” Vivica was skeptical.
“Really,” Joseph said, taking the box, pulling her hand toward him, and slipping the ring onto her finger. He then held up her hand to admire his work. “Not bad. It could pass for the real thing. It’s quite beautiful.”
Vivica was still doubtful. She tried to look for a brand name, but there was no logo on the velvet box.
“What did you just say? We’re getting married tomorrow?” she asked, suddenly remembering the most important part of his statement.
“Yes. Tomorrow morning is the only free time I have this week.”
When she didn’t respond, Joseph asked, “What’s wrong? Haven’t you made up your mind yet?”
Vivica thought of Chaim's situation and the need to get pregnant soon. Steeling her resolve, she said, “No, I've already decided. Tomorrow is fine.”
She glanced at the ring on her finger, still hesitant. “Is this really fake? Don’t lie to me. It would be a disaster if I lost it.”
“A simple dinner is fine. As for the wedding ceremony, that will probably have to wait.”
“We don’t need a ceremony,” Vivica said directly. “It’s a waste of time and money.”
Joseph raised an eyebrow, a hint of sourness in his tone. “You’ve been married before, so of course, you don’t care. But this is my first time. I haven’t had the chance to feel what it’s like to be the groom.”
Right. Vivica hadn't considered that. She couldn't help but smile. “In that case… I’ll leave all the arrangements to you.”
It wasn’t her money, after all. All she had to do was show up and be the beautiful bride.
With her future once again decided, Vivica was filled with a mix of emotions. She wondered if this marriage would be the one where they could truly hold hands and grow old together.
That night, Vivica sent a photo of the ring to Quintina Christie, who was so shocked she immediately called, screaming into the phone.
